Дело в том, что в литературе и обиходной речи оно часто употребляется не только в строгом значении petitio principii (т.е. подмена доказательства исходной посылкой), но и в более широком смысле. You’re begging the question. – Вы уходите от ответа/от моего вопроса. Это ничего не доказывает. This still begs the question as to whether... – Однако остается открытым/без ответа вопрос о том... А вот такой «ребус» из Webster’s: the danger that the question may be begged. Может быть, опасность ничего не значащего/банального ответа.
